ENGLISH WEEK 2024 | Spread the word: Tsismis 'a wake-up call' to voting youth

Who would've thought that a forty-minute, relatively low-budget skit could speak of the bravest voices of society?

This question was promptly answered with a short play production's portrayal of an ill-fated community's awakening for truth. The play, titled "Tsismis: A Gloc 9 Musical," was presented to the UCC Community last 12-13 November as part of festivities under the Literary Lumina brand.

The story, carefully crafted by Mr. Edcel Escaro and Ms. Ann MarianYhe Geronimo, revolves around the story of four idlers getting to know about the dire circumstances of the people in their society. Through these characters' stories, they learn the importance of choosing the right leader to avoid repeating the mistakes of those who have suffered in the past.

The climax of the act features the rise and fall of Jaime Sapak, an aspiring leader who embodies the traits of a weak, incompetent leader evading accountability.

The English majors concluded the performance with a medley of Gloc 9's "Upuan" and "Dapat Tama," which further amplified the necessity of selecting capable leaders to guide the community toward development and away from failure.

Despite some technical issues, the Yusisistas enjoyed the two-day performance. The last show was a block screening for friends and family of the actors, who also appreciated the narrative flow of the story.

Overall, the performance was a collective effort by the BSE-ENG freshmen and juniors, who worked well together and forged friendships during the three weeks of preparation. The true takeaway, however, was the critical message they conveyed: a wake-up call about the importance of selecting better leaders for a better society.

The cast and crew of "Tsismis," led by Directors Edcel Escaro and Ann MarianYhe Geronimo, extend their heartfelt appreciation to everyone who watched and supported the short skit presentation. Special thanks go to Direk John Bryan Capal of BSE-ENG 4A and Tanghal Productions, who served as the play's consultant. His guidance from the outset ensured that the act upheld a high standard and conveyed powerful advocacy.

While most gossip is meritless, this particular "tsismis" carries a profound truth. Let’s elevate our society to greater heights, one voice at a time.
